2024 BMW R 12 Arrives With 95 HP Boxer Engine From $12,345 in the US

The 2024 BMW R 12 is an urban cruiser that sits below the big-boxer R 18 in BMW's lineup. It sits alongside the sportier R 12 nineT and replaces the R nineT platform. In the US, it is sold at a manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) of $12,345.

BMW R 12 engine and performance

The motorcycle uses a 1170 cc, air- and oil-cooled, horizontally opposed twin boxer engine. It produces 95 HP at 6,500 rpm, which is 15 HP less than last year's R nineT. However, peak power arrives 1,250 rpm earlier. Torque is rated at 81 lb-ft (about 110 Nm) at 6,000 rpm. BMW lists a top speed of 124-plus mph. A six-speed gearbox uses a dry, hydraulically operated clutch and a shaft drive.

The Rock and Roll riding modes change throttle response, traction control, engine braking and idle behavior. Roll mode replaces the rain mode. BMW Motorrad ABS Pro works with cornering sensitivity.

Chassis, suspension and brakes

The steel trellis frame has a bolt-on rear subframe, which makes customization easier. Rake of 29.3 degrees and trail of 5.2 inches help keep the bike stable. Wheelbase is 59.8 inches. Seat height is 29.7 inches, or about 755 mm. Front and rear suspension travel is limited to 3.5 inches, so large potholes can overwhelm the setup.

The front has a non-adjustable 45 mm upside-down fork. At the rear is a Paralever shock with adjustable preload and rebound damping. The aluminum wheels are 19 inches at the front and 16 inches at the rear, with spoked wheels available as an option. Up front are two 310 mm discs with Brembo four-piston calipers, and a 265 mm disc at the rear. The tires are Bridgestone Battlax BT46. The fuel tank holds 3.7 gallons, and BMW gives an estimated fuel economy of 44 mpg. The curb weight is 500 pounds (about 227 kg), quoted as wet weight rather than dry.

Equipment, options and colors

Keyless ignition, Smart Emergency Call and the Multi-Controller come as standard. The $1,524 Select Package adds cruise control, hill start assist, heated grips, Connected Ride Control and a quickshifter. Color options are Blackstorm Metallic, optional Aventurine Red Metallic, and Avus Silver Metallic with Option 719 Thorium.
